"Putin Sabbing": Hungary threatens to block 10 package of sanctions

European diplomats plan to hold an informal discussion and discuss measures that would not allow Russia to buy and produce new weapons and ammunition. The 10th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation will be discussed, which on the eve of February 21, Hungarian representatives did not support. New restrictions on the financial sector, additional trade restrictions and individual sanctions against supporters of the regime of Vladimir Putin are envisaged.

However, Putin's closest ally in the EU - Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban - threatens to veto additional sanctions, which are reviewed in six months. Orban wants four people from the list of sub -persons and also does not support the idea of ​​extending the sanctions from 6 to 12 months. If sanctions are only half a year, then the Hungarian authorities will have more opportunities to torpedo the decisions approved by the European Union.

As a compromise, which would organize Orbana, it is proposed to continue sanctions for nine months. Journalists write that the EU and the United States have long been talking about India and China, who do not support Western sanctions against the Russian Federation, but do not notice that the Putin Sabbing has launched in their ranks in Budapest.

In the sidelines, high -ranking diplomats and officials recognize that they are afraid of the summer of 2024, when Hungary is presented in the EU Council. On Tuesday, February 21, the EU ambassadors failed to negotiate with the official Budapest.

Two diplomats have reported that the EU is ready to give in to the requirements of Orban and to cross out four people from the sanctions list, because if Hungary continues to be vetoed, the sanctions will have to be removed from all whom they had previously been applied. There are more than 1,400 people in the EU sanctions that are related to the Russian War, including oligarchs, representatives of the Russian Federation, military and security officers.

The Baltic States and Poland want to simplify the procedure for applying sanctions on Russian oligarchs' relatives, despite the fact that they may not have a direct relationship to the war in Ukraine. Recall that US Presidential Administration Joe Baiden has prepared a new package of restrictions on 200 individuals and legal entities from the Russian Federation who support the war in Ukraine. The main focus is now shifted towards the gasket companies that help Moscow bypass sanctions.
