The poverty level in Ukraine has increased 10 times due to war - the World Bank

Due to the deterioration of the economic situation, the poverty rate among Ukrainians in 2023 can rise to 55%. In Ukraine, a tenfold increase in poverty is observed in Ukraine against the background of a full -scale invasion of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the shelling of peaceful cities. The Regional Director of the World Bank of Eastern Europe ARUP Bannerji announced this in an interview with Reuters.

According to him, massive rocket strokes in Ukrainian cities will only complicate the difficult economic situation in Ukraine. In this context, Bannerji stressed that, against the background of wartime, a tenfold increase in poverty levels has been recorded in our country, which, according to experts, will still increase.

"Most countries have reported that they will provide financial support to Ukraine next year, and this is a very positive result," the World Bank's representative continued in communication with journalists. During the interview with Bannerji, he predicted that by the end of 2022, 25% of Ukrainians would live in poverty, compared to slightly more than 2% to a full -scale invasion of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and by the end of next year this figure could increase to 55%.

According to the Regional Director of the World Bank, because of the war, Ukraine was forced to reduce its budget plans to a minimum, and the main flow of funds is to pay salaries and pensions, military expenses and domestic debt service. While communicating with Bannerji journalists, he expressed concerns that Russian troops could continue to make missile strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure facilities so that another crisis is waiting for the country on the eve of the heating season.

"If this continues (massive shelling - ed. ) The prospects will be much more complicated. Since winter really begins to bite, of course, by December or January, and if the buildings are not repaired, another internal wave of migration, internally displaced persons may occur. . .

If Ukraine does not receive sufficient financial support, it will either have to print more money when inflation is already at 20%, or even more reduced social costs, " - summarized the World Bank Regional Director in an interview with Reuters. It is worth noting that the State Statistics Committee has recorded an increase in inflation in Ukraine.
