3D printing technology will help create hypersonic weapons and transport for military

The Pentagon is deploying a special Growing additive manufacturing Maturity for Airbreath Hypersonics. The Pentagon intends to use a technological process known as "Aditable Production" to create hypersonic systems and transport, writes defensenews. com. It is known that the US Department of Defense plans to increase hypersonic potential in the 2023 financial year, and therefore there is a need to strengthen the industrial base and ensure the transition from programs to production.

Within an initiative called Growing Additive Manufacting Maturity for AirBreath Hypersonics (Gamma-H), new materials and technologies will be studied to create systems that move and maneuver at a speed above 5 makhs (6125 km/h). The Office requires the support of private companies and research institutes that would help develop prototypes of devices capable of creating components for hypersonic missiles using the aditative production method-simply put, 3D printing.

In addition to the devices themselves, the software will also be required to automate all processes - from projection to printing. According to the Deputy Director of the Production Technology Program of the Office of Defense Kit Devris, it is theoretically possible, but it is necessary to provide a material base for putting ideas in practice. This should be facilitated by Gamma-H.

Since the parts used to create hypersonic systems must function in extreme conditions, they require advanced specifications and materials that can withstand high temperature and other mechanical loads. Aditative methods can help improve the quality of these parts and reduce the number of components needed to create military transport or weapons. The US Navy is also interested in participating in the Gamma-H program. The proposals from the Navy will be presented on December 12 this year.
