Provoke hunger. Satellite data show how much Ukrainian grain was destroyed by Russia

A new analysis of satellite images shows that almost 10 million tons of Ukrainian grain were affected by the Russian invasion. Russia's war against Ukraine touched every sixth granary - silos, elevators, grain bins and storage warehouses for grain and seeds. 75 out of 344 objects are destroyed, damaged or controlled by the army of the Russian Federation, notes in its new analysis The organization The Conflict Observatory.

Video of the day to identify the losses caused by Russia, the organization in cooperation with the National Laboratory of the OK-Reidge of the US Department of Energy has developed an algorithm for detecting objects that analyzes satellite images to detect damaged grain storage facilities. To do this, the researchers used old satellite images, as well as images of damaged storage facilities to teach the algorithm to find other injured objects.

This helped scientists approximately evaluate the scale of destruction and the amount of affected grain. Although researchers have not been able to analyze all objects - there are about 1300 granaries in the country, of which 344 have been studied in the report - this is the greatest assessment of today. By the beginning of the war, the total volume of Ukrainian storage was at least 58 million tons. As a result, more than 8.

4 million tonnes have already been lost: about 3 million tonnes have been damaged or destroyed, and about 6 million tons are in temporarily captured territories. The current situation threatens the supply of food to countries that depend on wheat exports, analysts write. It is difficult to conduct a general estimate of losses, since approximately 50% of the territories of interest to researchers do not have enough satellite photos taken after February 24.
