Gorbachev simply found himself in the place when the strength of the Soviet Union was exhausted. Everything was decided by the economy. All this "restraint", for which he was adored in the Western world, was simply a recognition of the fact that it does not work and now fall apart. He just looked at the results of the Communist Party in the previous 70 years and could not do anything with it. He saw the USSR spending the last dollars on the purchase of grain in Canada, which was not enough.

He saw 40% of the rubles went to the military-industrial complex and could not do anything with it. He wanted to save the USSR. No less than those grandparents who wanted to eliminate it. He just knew more about the USSR economy than they were. But even knowing this, he tried desperately to save the dying empire. And he could not. Although he tried. But he could not because economic freedom was needed to save the USSR. Market economy. And economic freedom always goes along with freedom political.

Could Gorbachev drown all the sprouts of freedom in the blood? Purely theoretically could. But this would not change the economic situation. And you cannot compare with China. China was very poor at the time when there were sprouts of freedom in 1989 in 1989 in the central square. Will Russia repeat the path of the USSR? So far, the Russian model has a more stable look. Just because Russia has a market economy.

But until the regime is changed, the reserves of the Russian economy strength are also exhausted. Yes, the market economy works better. But the path since 1991 has been significant. And that seems to be a very good result in 1991, is now seen as a total impoverishment. And so Russia has a chance to repeat the fate of the USSR. Because of their own stupidity, stubbornness and imperial ambitions.
