The largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhya NPP, was captured by Russian invaders after battles in Energodar on March 4. The buildings of the ZPE were damaged by Russian shelling in several places, and the staff of the station were captured. In addition, due to damage to power lines, the 4th NPP power unit was disconnected from the power system and transferred to the reserve. As a result of the shelling, on August 6, Russian shells hit the site near nuclear waste. Energoatom stated that the Russian soldiers carry out artillery shelling of Zaporizhzhya NPP, because they want to destroy its infrastructure and disconnect it from the power system of Ukraine to deactivate the South.

Grossi's CEO of the International Atomic Energy Agency has urged the IAEA mission to allow the Zaporizhzhya NPP after her shelling by Russian troops. On August 11, the Russian invaders continued to fire the Zaporizhzhya NPP area, one of the hits was near the first unit. On August 13, the occupiers again fired the territory of the ZPE.
