Russia executed 77 civil prisoners and detained hundreds of civilians in Ukraine - UN

"We have documented the total execution of 77 civilians when they were subjected to illegal detention by the Russian Federation," the publication reads. The UN Human Rights Mission Head in Ukraine, Matilda Boer, said that 72 men and 5 women died as a result of torture, inhumane conditions for detention and refusal of medical care.

"The Russian armed forces, law enforcement and penitentiary bodies used widespread torture and cruel treatment of civilian detainees," Bogner said, adding that in some cases sexual violence had occurred. The torture was used to force the victims to admit the help of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to force them to cooperate with the occupying authorities or to intimidate those who adhered to pro -Ukrainian views.

The document also states that such figures are based on 1136 interviews with victims, witnesses and other persons. The employees of the organization also visited 70 official places of detention under the control of the Ukrainian authorities 274 times. "We have documented more than 900 cases of arbitrary detention of civilians, including children and the elderly. The vast majority of these cases were committed by the Russian Federation," the report said.

At the same time, the mission recorded 75 cases of illegal detention by the Ukrainian security forces, mostly people suspected of conflict -related crimes. "We recorded that more than half of arbitrarily detained were tortured or ill -treatment by the Ukrainian security forces.
