Without much success: the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation started a large offensive in the Luhansk region - ISW
According to experts of the Institute of War Study (ISW) in the report of February 8, units of Russian troops attack the defensive boundaries of defense forces northwest of Svatov near Kupyansk and west of Kreminna, slightly moving along the border of Kharkiv and Luhansk regions. The report states that the pace of operations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the western part of the Luhansk region has increased significantly in the last week.
That is why the Russian military command has completely involved some of the several divisions for decisive offensive operations along the Svatovo-Classin line. In particular, the enemy involved the forces of several regiments of the 144th and 3rd Motorial Divisions (Western Military District) and a regiment of the 90th Tank Division (Central Military District) with the support of units of the 76th Airborne Division and other units of the Southern Military District.
"The involvement of significant units of at least three major Russian divisions in this sector indicates that the Russian offensive has begun," military experts say.
Meanwhile, it is noted that Ukrainian defenders do not allow the opponent to achieve significant success, although the offensive of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation has not yet involved part of the 2nd Motorized Rifle Division of the 1st Guards Tank Army, which was deployed in the Luhansk region in January after being overturned from Belarus.
Analyzing the situation, the experts came to the conclusion that despite the interception of the initiative, the full activation of all the enemy forces in this direction can lead to a culmination along the Svatovo-Kremin line without achieving the purposes of capturing all over the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. This, for its part, will give the Ukrainian defense forces for its own counter -offensive.
